When death steps in...

Committed and compassionate intensive care nurse, Rachel O'Dea will do anything to save her patients. But when she loses a kind and loving man whom she forged a fatherly relationship with, Rachel unravels.

...or so everyone thinks.

The calm and soothing voices Rachel hears and the apparitions she sees are of the deceased man and his late wife as they navigate and persuade her to make important choices in her life, leading her right where she's supposed to be.

Free clinic doctor, Devon Jameson, needs more hands on deck. He can't possibly handle all the medical cases alone. When Rachel walks in, volunteering her services, he knows he has no choice other than to take her on board as she proves her worth when a pediatric trauma is left on his doorstep and there’s no one else to assist. As the two begin working together, their lives intertwine and the attraction intensifies. Scarred deeply by their past and their pain, Rachel and Devon begin a future only angels could predict.

Rachel walked over to the young Latino woman and waited for her to open the glass before speaking. “Hi, I’m here to see Dr. Jameson.”
“The doctor is busy,” she said pushing a clipboard forward. “Fill this out and I’ll call your name when it’s your turn,” she said in heavily accented English, and turned her attention back to her nails.
“Sorry, no,” Rachel said. “You misunderstand.” She glanced at the woman’s nametag. “Maria, I’m not here for an appointment. I’m, er, a friend of Dr. Jameson’s.” The lie poured off her tongue and she gripped the shoulder strap of her purse praying she wouldn’t be sent away.
Maria’s hand stilled and she lifted a brow. “The doctor has no friends.” The clinic’s phone began to ring, but she ignored it.
Gee, I wonder why almost spilled from Rachel’s mouth but she caught herself just in time. Not for the first time she wondered how Seamus had spawned the devil himself.
“Maria,” Devon’s harsh voice yelled out. “Answer that damn phone already.”
“I’m busy,” Maria replied sweetly, loud enough to be heard in the back. She glanced at Rachel. A sly smile curved her lips. “Talking to your friend.”
“I don’t have any friends,” he said coming around the corner.
“See?” Maria said with a careless shrug, going back to her nails once more. “I told you.”
Awesome. Just fucking awesome. Rachel wanted to crawl under a rock and die. Get lost in the Sahara Desert with no water in 150 degree heat. Or be left in shark-infested waters with no life raft. Be anywhere but here. You owe me, Seamus.
“What the hell are you doing here?” he demanded.
“I… ah,” Rachel cleared her throat. Fuck my life. Why had she let Seamus talk her into this again? Oh yes. He didn’t want his body in a cold steel box. If what the ghost had said was true and he wasn’t just her overactive imagination playing tricks on her. Damn it. Devon was going to see reason. She steeled her shoulders and lifted her chin. “I need to talk to you.” She glanced at Maria. “In private,” she added.
“You knock her up or something, Doc? Cuz there’s only one reason a woman comes in here looking that way. Like she’s going to tell you about the little bun in her oven.”
“What? No!” Rachel and Devon said in unison.
The horror Rachel felt must’ve been written all over her face, because Devon scowled and Maria just laughed. Heat flamed Rachel’s cheeks.
“You get five minutes,” he said harshly and turned on his heal.
Maria motioned with her nail file. “Go through that door, chica. Turn left and you’ll find the doctor. Good luck,” she said with a wink. “I hope it’s a girl. Another boy with that man’s temper? No bueno.” She tsked.

Hi, I’m Kathleen and I’m going to be your nurse tonight. How are you feeling—Oh! Oops! Wrong job, LOL.  I really do need to remember to try and delete “Oops” from my vocabulary. Doesn’t really inspire confidence in a patient when that word pops out of my mouth—which is way too often. J I am so very happy to be here. Thank you for the invitation to get out of my scrubs and chill for a bit.

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I was first published back in 2008, but I’ve always written stories.

How did you come up with this storyline?
Ha! I was just talking about this tonight at work. I’d actually started this manuscript back in 2007 and shelved it. The idea had originally came on a night where one of my patients had passed away. I can’t remember if we had coded him or if it was a case where we withdrew care.

When a patient dies, we remove all the invasive lines and tubes, bathe the body, put glasses and dentures in place and then bag the body for the morgue. I don’t know if anyone has ever seen a dead body up close—and I’m not talking about a viewing in a mortuary where the person looks like they’re sleeping.

Well on this particular night as I was going about doing post mortem care and my mind started with the “what if” questions. I couldn’t get the patient’s mouth to close around his dentures and they kept sliding out. So then I’m wondering What if he is standing beside me as I’m doing this watching me and shaking his head at my failure to get the dentures in place properly? What if I could actually see and talk to him and he gave me advice? What if I saw his ghost and just freaked the F—ck out? LOL

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
Some of the best aspects of writing is all the really great friendships I’ve made over the years. I’ve learned so much and have grown tremendously as a writer thanks to the support of the writing community and am so grateful.
The worst aspect… probably all of the promotional work that goes into a book release. Trying to get the word spread about your book is really hard. There are so many great authors out there and standing up and shouting to the world “Read Mine!!!” seems a bit ridiculous. LOL But I’m learning…

What inspires you to write?
Working critical care can be extremely depressing. Helping people who suffer with horrendous illnesses or have been involved in tragic accidents can chip away at a person’s spirit. I love happily ever afters—who doesn’t? Writing is a wonderful escape for me.

How did you conduct your research for Chicks Dig Scars?
I’ve been a nurse for 23 years, so you can say I’ve been “researching” all of my adult life!

What are 3 of your favorite quotes from Chicks Dig Scars?
Maybe this whole I’m your dead patient and I’m going to haunt you thing is growing on me.

“Christ, I’m losing my mind. I’m yelling at a dead man.”

“There’s sex in the afterlife?”

Any more Favorites from Chicks Dig Scars?

Yes! The scene where Devon’s receptionist thinks Rachel is knocked up. See below:

“Go through that door, chica. Turn left and you’ll find the doctor. Good luck,” she said with a wink. “I hope it’s a girl. Another boy with that man’s temper? No bueno.” She tsked.
              “I’m not pregnant!” Rachel insisted.

What would your friends say is your best quality?
That I have a lot of drive...

Are reader reviews important to you? Why?
Important? Hmmm… I do love hearing from readers, but I don’t write for the reviews. I write for me.

What do you do when you don’t write? Like in “Real Life”
Work. I have four kids to get through college. Two are in college and 3rd kiddo starts in the fall. When I’m off, my husband and I have season baseball and football tickets, go to concerts, I bake—of course—and there’s lots of mandatory education required for my job as a flight nurse.

Tell us about your other books?
Besides Chicks Dig Scars, I currently have 4 titles available: The first two books of my Dating Series~Dating 911 & Dating Impossible; The Doctor’s Deception; Sex Is The Best Medicine, and Diary of A Naughty Nurse. All of these are contemporary romances with action packed medical drama, humor and
steamy enough to fog your glasses!

Full time nurse, amateur cake baker, writer, and zombie obsessed, Kathleen draws a lot from the real-life medical drama she experiences as a RN for her novels. Writing romance is a creative outlet where she can effectively deal with the daily stress and sorrow, adding levity and humor to situations that provide a happily ever after when there isn't one. She has recently discovered the fantastic world of air ambulance after 20+ years of working critical care in the hospital and relishes her role as a flight nurse!
